From the Cockpit to the Saddle — Meet Jay Miller
As an airline captain, Jay spent his career traveling the world, but no place captured his heart quite like Girona, Spain. Now living in Girona full-time, Jay combines his lifelong love of cycling with a passion for people by offering custom bike tours designed for riders of all backgrounds and abilities.
Jay’s passion for all things bicycle. From road, gravel, and MTB riding to racing, exploring new routes, and sharing his deep knowledge of training principles and technical skills, has inspired him to turn his love of the sport into a mission: to guide others through the cycling paradise that is Girona. Drawing on decades of experience as an airline instructor, he brings a unique ability to teach, encourage, and connect with riders of all levels.
What began as a personal dream of riding the quiet roads, gravel paths, and mountain trails of Catalonia has grown into a full-service guiding business with one simple goal: giving every guest the trip of a lifetime.
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just want to explore the region on two wheels (or by foot), Jay and his wife Daylin, Middle Ground’s lead guide and route-master, are here to make it easy, enjoyable, and unforgettable. No pressure, no ego. Just good rides, great service, and local knowledge you can trust.
Meet Daylin Membreño-Miller
Co-founder, Middle Ground Cycling Certified Cycling Guide
Originally from Nicaragua, Daylin moved to Girona in 2018. What began as an uncertain time soon sparked a life-changing passion for road and gravel cycling. Though a beginner at first, she discovered in cycling a tool of empowerment, freedom, and connection with her new surroundings.
Since then, Daylin has logged tens of thousands of kilometers on Girona’s stunning gravel and road routes. While she doesn’t dwell on her racing accomplishments, her results speak for themselves: a first-place finish and a near-podium at major international gravel events. More importantly, she uses her skills and strength to shepherd riders of all levels through unforgettable cycling experiences.
Fluent in Catalan, a rarity among local guides, Daylin also holds a top-tier cycling technician license from the Catalan Cycling Federation. With more than five years of experience guiding for Girona’s top shops and independently, she’s known not only for her expert route design and bike-handling skills, but also for her warm, approachable style.
Beyond guiding, Daylin is a mother of two and a psychology student. She’s also the founder of CUESTA ARRIBA, a podcast and community that brings visibility to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, offering a safe space for conversation, healing, and change.
Daylin embodies a rare balance of strength, sensitivity, and purpose. Her story inspires, and her guiding transforms.
About Middle Ground Cycling — Why Girona?
After nearly a decade of calling Girona home, Jay and Daylin have explored every corner of its extraordinary cycling landscape, from the breathtaking Pyrenees to the rugged and picturesque Costa Brava.
Girona, nestled in the “Middle Ground” between mountain and sea, is an ideal base for riders of all levels. Medieval towns, ancient cathedrals, castles, flat farm roads, rolling hills, and challenging climbs are all within reach. Choose your adventure, and we’ll make it happen.
The city itself is rich in history, with streets and landmarks dating back over a thousand years, from Roman times to Napoleonic invasions. In more recent history, Girona was famously home to the U.S. Postal Service cycling team during the Lance Armstrong era and is now the unofficial European base for pro cycling teams from around the world. On any given day, you’re likely to see elite riders on the roads or sipping espresso at one of the many open-air cafés.
Game of Thrones fans may recognize Girona’s old quarter (Barri Vell), where several seasons were filmed. Its architectural beauty and mythical ambiance almost make you expect dragons overhead, fitting, since dragons also play a role in Catalan folklore.
Beyond cycling, Girona is a global destination for food, culture, and history. With several Michelin-starred restaurants, including a former world #1, and a wealth of local culinary treasures, it’s the perfect spot to unwind off the bike or for non-cycling companions to enjoy a world-class vacation.
